Computer Packing Basics

Packing your computer and peripheral equipment must be done very carefully. Many moving companies will offer to specially pack your computer at an additional cost. If your budget allows this, it may be a good option as it will allow your machine to be packed carefully and securely and will give it the best chance of surviving the moving process with no damage. However, packing up your machine yourself is easy and can be done safely with the proper packing preparations. Whether you decided to pack your machine yourself or have your moving company pack it for you, it is important to make sure that you have enough insurance coverage to replace your computer and accessories should an accident happen.

No matter which packing option is right for you, you will need to make sure you back up all your files and important data before the move. The best way to accomplish this is by making backup files of your data on CD-ROMS, or by using a USB Thumbdrive or portable hard drive. This will ensure that no matter what your important files and data will be available to you at any time. Keep these back up files with you during the move, don't pack them in a box or container that will be going with the movers. It is also advisable to keep any expensive software separate from your computer and with you during the moving process.

After you have made your back up files, you can begin disassembling the computer and its' accessories. It is always best to consult your computer's manual for any special instructions on disassembling and moving your computer. Start by making sure there are no disks or CD-ROM's in any of the computer drives. Once they are all clear, shut down your computer as you normally would. Unplug each machine so you don't damage the computer or electrocute yourself. It is best to clearly label all cords and plugs by taping a label to each one, this will make set up far easier in your new home. If you still have the original boxes your computer arrived in, use these to pack your machine in. They will offer the best protection and let the movers know what the contents are and to handle it with extra care. If you do not have the original packing, try and find boxes that will allow for adequate packing material, but still hold the computer in place without any movement. Try and keep your computer upright when you pack it, packing it in a position other than its' standard operating one may damage the computer's components.

Monitors, printers, and other peripheral equipment are just as fragile as your computer and need to be packed with just as much care. If possible, try to their use original packaging. If you no longer have the original boxes remember to wrap each of these items carefully in bubble wrap or other packing material and place them upright, and in a box that will hold them securely. Once you have your computer and associated equipment packed up, label it and note each box and its' contents in your moving binder. Doing this will make it easier to find while you are unpacking. Be sure to mark each box as fragile on the top and all sides of each box and to label what room it needs to be put in at your new residence. Double check that each box is taped properly and your computer is will be ready to safely travel to your new home.
